iPhone 18 Standard Might Be Incredible! Hold Off Until Next Spring

Every year when new iPhones are about to launch, the saying “those who wait always win” goes viral. But things may play out differently this time.

According to multiple supply‑chain sources, Apple is set to break its nearly decade‑long iPhone release schedule. In the September 2026 fall event, only the iPhone 18 Pro series and Apple’s first foldable phone are expected to arrive. The mainstream iPhone 18 standard model will be delayed until the spring event in 2027.

This shift has been indirectly confirmed by Apple’s manufacturer Pegatron during its Q2 earnings call. As reported by Economic Daily, Pegatron disclosed that one key client will adjust its usual smartphone shipment timetable. Industry observers widely believe this client is Apple.

Ever since the iPhone 11, Apple has unveiled its full iPhone lineup in September. The iPhone 18 series will split the launch into two phases. The premium Pro models will debut in autumn, while the standard version will be held for next spring.

Many assume the delayed standard model will play a secondary role. However, based on current hardware rumors, the postponed iPhone 18 standard may turn out to be the most compelling device of this generation.

According to the latest notes from analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 18 standard is likely to get 12GB of RAM, a big upgrade from the previous 8GB, bringing it on par with Pro‑level memory. The 9GB RAM spec mentioned by Ming‑Chi Kuo is expected to be reserved for the entry‑level iPhone 18e.

Beyond memory, design tweaks from the Pro line may filter down to the base model.

The iPhone 18 Pro will feature a smaller Dynamic Island for a cleaner display. Jeff Pu suggests this improvement could also come to the iPhone 18 standard.

The hardware gap between standard and Pro iPhones is clearly shrinking. In day‑to‑day user‑facing features such as memory and screen design, the standard variant is catching up with Pro devices.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro arriving this September looks to be a modest refresh.

Mark Gurman previously described it as an “S‑style incremental update”. Major changes include a reduced‑size Dynamic Island, a new cherry color option, and variable‑aperture camera. Its biggest highlight will be the A20 Pro chip built on TSMC’s 2‑nanometer process.

On top of that, rising component costs are expected to drive up Pro‑series pricing. Reports predict a $200‑$300 price hike overseas. The starting price for the Chinese‑market Pro version could reach 9,999 RMB.

Put simply, buyers will pay more for relatively minor improvements.

The rising competitiveness of standard iPhones started with the iPhone 17.

The iPhone 17 standard brought a 120Hz high‑refresh‑rate display, 256GB base storage, 8GB RAM, dual 48MP cameras and 40W wired charging. It covered nearly all high‑priority features for ordinary consumers. Counterpoint data shows its sales in China nearly doubled compared with its predecessor.

For most users, the Pro‑exclusive telephoto lens gets rarely used. High refresh rate and ample storage make a real difference in daily use.

The iPhone 18 standard will further boost specs with 12GB RAM and the revamped Dynamic Island. If its retail price does not rise sharply, it will build on the iPhone 17’s strong value proposition — and possibly go even further.

If you are still using an iPhone 13 or older, you can stay calm through this September’s launch. There is no urgent need to upgrade to the pricier, lightly‑updated Pro models. You may prefer to wait for the spring‑arriving iPhone 18 standard before making your purchase decision.
