“Chip‑Driven Inflation”: Flash Prices Surge 10‑Fold, Supply Shortage Set to Persist Next Year

Recent volatility in the storage market has exceeded expectations of most industry participants. “Certain Flash components have seen prices jump roughly ten‑fold from their lows.” This statement lays bare deep‑seated contradictions within the storage industrial chain amid the boom in AI computing‑power infrastructure. This round of price hikes is no longer a simple supply‑demand mismatch, but a concentrated manifestation of “chip‑driven inflation” across the storage segment.

From the perspective of industrial transmission logic, the large‑scale deployment of AI servers and intelligent computing clusters requires every AI chip to be paired with higher‑capacity, higher‑bandwidth storage units. VRAM has entered a shortage cycle first, and demand for NAND Flash has simultaneously exploded. Coupled with storage manufacturers’ long‑term production curtailment and the strategy of shifting capacity toward high‑value‑added AI‑optimized storage products, the market’s supply‑demand balance has been completely disrupted. Even leading original equipment manufacturers cannot accurately estimate the actual supply‑demand gap for next year.

Some market observers previously argued that continuous capacity expansion by major global storage vendors would soon bring the market back to the old cycle of oversupply. However, given the current expansion pace of the AI industry, this view clearly underestimates incremental demand. Construction of AI cloud infrastructure is still advancing at high speed, while large‑scale rollout of edge AI has yet to fully kick off. A substantial portion of newly‑added semiconductor production capacity is being channeled into the AI ecosystem, and newly released storage capacity will almost immediately be absorbed by surging computing‑power demand.

the core conflict in the industry has shifted from “how much further prices will rise” to “who can secure more resources”. The fact that Flash prices are no longer skyrocketing is actually a healthy sign for the industry. Gross profit margins of upstream original manufacturers are already at elevated levels; unchecked price surges would in turn hurt downstream demand. Moving forward, vendors with stable original‑manufacturer supply relationships and the ability to lock‑in capacity in advance will be well‑positioned to defend their market share amid next year’s supply constraints. For downstream system vendors, proactively building reasonable safety stock and deepening long‑term collaboration with upstream storage suppliers have become essential measures to tackle chip‑driven storage inflation.
