The ADS1248 is a highly integrated and precise 24-bit analog-to-digital converter with the following main functions1:
Signal Conversion and Processing
High Resolution and Precision: It is a 24-bit ADC, providing extremely high resolution for accurately converting analog signals to digital values without missing codes, which is crucial for applications requiring precise measurement of small signal changes, such as in scientific research equipment and high-precision sensors.
Programmable Gain Amplifier (PGA): The built-in low-noise PGA offers selectable gains from 1 to 128. It can amplify small input signals before conversion, increasing the measurement sensitivity and accuracy, and is especially useful when dealing with weak analog signals from sensors.
Delta-Sigma Modulator and Digital Filter: The precision delta-sigma ADC with a single-cycle settling digital filter ensures fast and accurate conversion. The delta-sigma modulator and adjustable digital filter can settle in only one cycle, enabling fast channel cycling when using the input multiplexer and supporting data rates up to 2 ksps. For data rates of 20 sps or less, the filter can reject both 50 Hz and 60 Hz interference.
Input and Multiplexing
Multiple Input Channels: An input multiplexer supports four differential inputs for the ADS1248. In addition, the multiplexer has a sensor burn-out detect, voltage bias for thermocouples, system monitoring, and general-purpose digital I/Os.
Flexible Input Configuration: It can handle differential and single-ended input signals, providing flexibility in connecting different types of analog sources.
Reference and Calibration
Low-Drift Internal Reference: It has a built-in, very low drift voltage reference with 10 mA output capacity and a maximum drift of 10 ppm/°C, providing a stable reference voltage for accurate conversion.
Self and System Calibration: The device supports self and system calibration, which helps to maintain the accuracy and stability of the conversion over time and under different operating conditions.
Interface and Power Supply
SPI-Compatible Serial Interface: It uses an SPI-compatible serial interface for easy communication with microcontrollers and other digital devices, reducing the complexity of the circuit design and the number of pins required.
Wide Supply Voltage Range: The analog supply can operate in both unipolar (2.7 V to 5.25 V) and bipolar (±2.5 V) modes, and the digital supply voltage range is 2.7 V to 5.25 V, providing flexibility in power supply options and making it suitable for a wide range of applications with different power supply requirements.
Additional Features
Internal Temperature Sensor: It has an internal temperature sensor, which can be used for temperature monitoring and compensation within the device or in the system.
